Challenges, opportunities in Nepal

By Rebecca Stanley

New Life Community Development in Nepal has initiated the foundational steps to train and empower women leaders. It was a joy to be with the women and have the opportunity to interact and train the women.

In rural Nepal, women encounter specific challenges tied to socio-economic factors. As of my last update in January 2022, the population of women in rural areas faces hurdles such as limited access to quality education and healthcare. Economic opportunities for women in rural settings are often constrained, contributing to a persistent gender gap in income and employment.

Additionally, the prevalence of gender-based violence can be higher in rural communities. Women in these areas may encounter cultural norms that reinforce traditional gender roles, limiting their participation in decision-making processes. It’s essential to address these issues comprehensively to enhance the well-being and empowerment of women in rural Nepal. For the most recent and accurate data, please refer to the latest sources.

In Nepal, women face challenges such as limited access to education, gender-based violence, and unequal economic opportunities. As of January 2022, approximately 27% of women aged 15 and above had experienced physical or sexual violence. The literacy gender gap persisted, with around 67% of women being literate compared to 84% of men. Economic participation for women is a concern, showing a significant employment gap between genders.

Moreover, Nepal has been grappling with human trafficking issues. The country serves as a source, transit, and destination for human trafficking. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable to trafficking for various forms of exploitation, including forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation. Combating human trafficking remains a crucial aspect of addressing the challenges faced by women in Nepal.

Addressing the current status and challenges faced by women in Nepal, the emphasis is on systematic development through regular training sessions, capacity building, skill development opportunities, and income generation. The core principle involves grounding these women believers firmly in their faith in Jesus, envisioning a future where they emerge as transformative “Change Agents” for Nepal. There’s a wonderful opportunity for KGF to connect with women in this country, and I’m reaching out to you to join me in prayer for NLCD’s impactful initiatives. Let’s lift up the skill training, health awareness programs, and other efforts aimed at empowering these women. In particular, let’s pray for the women who’ve undergone the initial training, that they return to their communities motivated to make a difference in small yet meaningful ways. My hope is that God allows KGF to come alongside, offering support and encouragement through our prayers and assistance.
